East Quogue sits on Shinnecock Bay’s western shore, with a portion of Westhampton Island falling within its boundaries. The hamlet is roughly ten minutes from Westhampton and fifteen minutes from Southampton Village. It is accessible from Exit 64 off Sunrise Highway, and the nearest Long Island Rail Road stations are in Hampton Bays and Westhampton.
East Quogue was known as Fourth Neck from 1673 until it received its current name in 1891, reflecting its position east of the Village of Quogue. The hamlet’s early economy was built on fishing and farming, with family names like Carter, Squires, and Foster still visible on local street signs and still active in the community. In the late nineteenth century, woodcutting became a supplementary industry in the heavily wooded northern sections. Author and illustrator Palmer Cox spent winters in East Quogue, developing his popular Brownies characters and entertaining local children with stories.
East Quogue’s beach access is split between the bay and the ocean. Along Shinnecock Bay, the East Quogue Marine Park offers a public boat ramp, marina, and scenic waterfront. On the barrier island, Hot Dog Beach and Dolphin Beach provide Atlantic Ocean access. Hot Dog Beach, once a well known party destination, was purchased by the town and reopened in 2019 with a restored boardwalk and public amenities.
The Westhampton Dwarf Pine Plains, nearly 800 acres of preserved land in northern East Quogue, offer trails for hiking and birdwatching through a rare and ecologically significant landscape. The Pine Neck Sanctuary preserves 77 acres of salt marsh waterfowl habitat along the bay. The East Quogue Village Green provides a playground and picnic area. Boating, fishing, and paddleboarding on Shinnecock Bay round out the outdoor options.
East Quogue’s dining options cover a range of casual to waterfront. Local spots along Montauk Highway serve pizza, deli fare, bagels, and Asian fusion. Waterfront restaurants near the bay draw summer crowds for seafood and sunset dining. The hamlet’s nightlife picks up in the warmer months, with popular spots that attract visitors from neighboring communities. For a broader range of restaurants and shops, Westhampton Beach and Hampton Bays are both a short drive away.
East Quogue is primarily a residential community, with accommodations largely in the form of seasonal home rentals. Its location between Westhampton and Hampton Bays makes it a convenient base for visitors looking for a quieter Hamptons experience with easy access to beaches, dining, and nightlife in surrounding areas.
