Location and Geography

Westhampton occupies the western edge of the Hamptons within the Town of Southampton. It borders Moriches Bay to the north and is close to the Atlantic Ocean to the south, with Westhampton Beach Village serving as the gateway to the barrier island and Dune Road. Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway both pass through the hamlet, and the Westhampton LIRR station connects to Penn Station in roughly two hours.

Local History

The area now known as Westhampton was originally inhabited by the Shinnecock people. European settlement followed the 1659 Quogue Purchase, and the community was formally incorporated into the Town of Southampton in 1666. Early industries included farming, fishing, and milling. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in the 1870s transformed Westhampton into a summer resort destination. The hamlet has an unusual Cold War footnote as well. During the 1950s, the government converted a former dairy farm into a secret missile site, housing over 50 nuclear tipped missiles until the base was decommissioned in 1964.

Beaches and Waterfront Highlights

Westhampton’s beach access runs through neighboring Westhampton Beach, where Dune Road stretches along the Atlantic Ocean with some of the finest sand on the East End. Several public and permit beaches are accessible from the village, and Cupsogue Beach County Park to the west offers additional oceanfront with camping and fishing. Moriches Bay to the north provides calmer water for boating and kayaking.

Outdoor Recreation and Things to Do

Tennis and golf are popular in Westhampton, with multiple clubs operating in the area. The Quogue Wildlife Refuge, a preserved natural area nearby, offers hiking and birdwatching. Cupsogue Beach County Park adds camping and fishing to the outdoor calendar. Cycling is common on the flat, tree lined roads throughout the hamlet. The Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center brings national acts to the area year round, and the Village Green with its gazebo hosts community events throughout the seasons.

Dining and Shopping

Most of Westhampton’s dining and shopping activity is found along Montauk Highway and in the nearby Westhampton Beach Village. Seafood is a staple, with oysters, fish and chips, and shrimp options widely available. Longtime local favorites serve comfort food alongside pizza and burger joints. Farm stands throughout the hamlet sell seasonal produce, baked goods, and honey. The Main Street in Westhampton Beach has seen significant investment in recent years, with new restaurants, cafes, and boutiques adding energy to the area.

Places to Stay

Westhampton and surrounding areas offer a range of accommodations for visitors, from inns and hotels in Westhampton Beach to vacation rentals throughout the hamlet. The area’s accessibility by rail, road, and air through Gabreski Airport makes it one of the easiest Hamptons destinations to reach, especially for weekend travelers from New York City.
