Eastport sits along Moriches Bay on Long Island’s South Shore, just west of Remsenburg and east of Center Moriches. It is positioned at the border of Brookhaven and Southampton, giving it a unique identity as a transitional community between western Long Island suburbs and the East End. Major roadways including Montauk Highway and Sunrise Highway run through the hamlet, and the nearest LIRR station is in Speonk.
Eastport’s roots trace back to 1772, when a dam was built across what became West Pond, dividing the area between Brookhaven and Southampton. The community was originally split into two hamlets, Waterville and Seatuck. In 1860, the U.S. Postal Department combined them under the name Eastport after Seatuck was deemed too similar to Setauket. From the 1880s through the mid twentieth century, Eastport became the duck capital of Long Island, with as many as 29 farms producing millions of ducks annually. That era has passed, but its legacy remains part of the community’s identity.
While Eastport is more bay facing than ocean facing, the waterfront is central to daily life. Seatuck Cove provides calm waters ideal for boating, kayaking, and fishing, and residents with waterfront properties often have private docks. Moriches Bay is just minutes away by boat, and ocean beaches in Westhampton Beach and the broader Hamptons are a short drive to the east.
Boating and fishing are the primary outdoor draws in Eastport. The town operated marina and boat ramp provide public access to the water, and the bay supports a range of activities from clamming to sailing. On land, the area’s flat terrain and quiet roads are well suited for cycling, and nearby nature preserves offer walking and birdwatching opportunities.
Eastport’s dining scene is small but well loved. The Eastport Luncheonette is an old school local favorite with a loyal following. Trumpets on the Bay offers waterfront seafood dining. Along Montauk Highway and the surrounding blocks, residents can find taquerias, delis, pizza shops, and a bakery. For a wider selection of restaurants and nightlife, Westhampton Beach and East Quogue are nearby.
Eastport has limited but distinctive accommodations, including The Watermark Hamptons, a Neo Classical mansion overlooking the marina that offers a boutique lodging experience. The hamlet is more commonly a destination for home renters and buyers looking for an affordable, year round alternative to the busier Hamptons villages.
